Extra Innings: 09/14/07

Marz’s thoughts:  The Cubs and Cards have a crucial weekend series coming up this weekend and the Cards are in need of a win or they will be added to the Leading Off Elimination pool. The atmosphere will be great there with Ozzie Smith throwing out the first pitch. Plus, with the new stadium it kicks it up a notch… i like it better than the old Busch.
P.S. – Great weekend of sports – college football, EAGLES and BASEBALL – Go Phils…

Cuch’s thoughts:  Predictions for the weekend – Dodgers sweep D-Backs, Cubs split with Cards, Yankees take 2 of 3 from Boston, Tigers take 2 of 3 from Twins, Phillies take 2 of 3 from Mets, Rockies lose 2 of 3 from Marlins and Padres lose 2 of 3 from Giants.
P.S. – Don’t forget – "Don’t hoot with the Owls and then expect to soar with the Eagles!"

Extra Innings: 09/13/07

Marz’s thoughts:  While my predictions for Rookie of the Year were not really good, my predictions in the American League were much better. There is more parity in baseball this year which makes it tougher and tougher to make predictions before the season. I was around 50% this year and next year I am shooting for 75%.
P.S. – Vinny had about 40% and Chris 35% which means that they are not nearly as smart as I and they should simply retire TODAY!

Cuch’s thoughts:  Johnny Marz is a cheater! I knew this was going to happen. I spoke of it at the top of the show. He keeps picking this game of the day pre-emptively and leaving me with the scraps. No wonder he gets 2 of every 19 right. If not for cheating, he would clearly be shut out!
P.S. – Troy Glaus could not have picked a better time to get surgery and be missing for the remainder of the year. His name just came up in connections with the steroid investigation and now he is unavailable for comment.

Extra Innings: 09/12/07

Marz’s thoughts:  With all the negativity surrounding sports today, it was so nice to have Jeff Suppan on our show. He is a player that exemplifies the way athletes should be today….humble, generous and respectful. I have become a fan of players that show these qualities and add Jeff Suppan to that list!
P.S. – I am gonna pick my game of the day for tomorrow…I am going with Philly – Colorado AGAIN. This is a pre-emptive strike…i gotta be right!

Cuch’s thoughts:  So i guess we will officially eliminate the Mariners tomorrow – for some reason…we don’t shut up and teams get to last another day. Don’t be fooled, the M’s (although fun) are toast. Next on the list…St. Louis needs to get a win to avoid being discussed. The Rockies – Phillies loser over the next two days and the Dodgers are all on alert!
P.S. – We apologize for mis-reporting the issue…Ozzie Guillen has actually been promoted to owner of the team. They felt the extension to 2012 was not enough!

Extra Innings: 09/11/07

Our thoughts:  9.11.01 is a tragic day for the United States…as a nation we mourn the loss of so many innocent souls…baseball played an important role in the healing of the nation by returning to action. Johnny Marz remembers a specific moment when Larry Bowa had tears streaming down his eyes during the National Anthem. Everyone was touched and no one should forget!

Leading Off

Extra innings: 09/10/07

Seth’s thoughts:  So simply because Donovan McNabb can’t complete a pass and the Eagles have brutal special teams, i have to host this morning? Well I had fun and I am rooting for the Eagles to lose everyweek now! Johnny Marz is almost back to his normal self and I expect to see him tomorrow.
P.S. – I guess I can not say much though cause my team is the Syracuse Orange and they do not appear to winning another game for 7 years!

Cuch’s thoughts:  Congrats to Curtis Granderson – a real nice guy and a now one of only 3 men to hit 20 doubles, triples, homers and have 20 steals. That is real impressive regardless the ballpark to have that power, speed and agility! I spoke to him several times in Spring Training and during the year and he is in the category of "guys you wanna root for". I hope this is just the beginning.
P.S. – On this day – JETS fans are classless! J-E-T-S Mess Mess Mess

Extra Innings: 09/07/07

Marz’s thoughts:  I am looking forward to the weekend. I am rooting all weekend for my Phils to climb back into this wild card and division race! I will also be rooting for the Eagles this weekend against the Packers! Enjoy the weekend of sports – it is a packed one!
P.S. – Thanks to all my adoring fans who allowed me to play the Eagles song at the end of the show!

Cuch’s thoughts:  Several teams on are the brink this weekend. First off, if either Seattle or Detroit pull off a sweep this weekend, the other team is OUT! The Rockies, Dodgers and Phillies are also on the brink. All teams involved need to think 2 out of 3 in their series…We will AGAIN attempt to eliminate the Braves on Monday – they are out but we just can’t officially find the time to do it.
P.S. – I can’t wait until the Eagles lose this weekend JUST so we can rub it in to John on Monday!

Extra Innings: 09/06/07

Marz’s thoughts:  Kenny Rogers and Mark Mulder came back pitching for two teams that are in the Wild Card hunt. Sometimes it is not the trades you make but the guys you get back from injury and how well they perform that can put a team over the top and into the playoffs.
P.S. – Here is a note to all you players that listen. Come on the show and hit homers and throw shutouts…ask Brandon Phillips and Justin Germano.

Cuch’s thoughts:  I have no problem with Carl Crawford getting suspended as he did for arguing with the umpire on a play at first base. The only issue i have with the situation is that he was entirely right. Now that should not determine the his suspension but as a competitor, it is clear that he would get furious at such a bad call. There is no suspension but what can we do to the umpire for getting it wrong? I believe the umps do a great job as a whole but there is no visible punishment for an ump when they make the mistake.
P.S. – Keep an eye on Carlos Delgado and his sore hip. He is having an MRI and although right now it is not the biggest deal with the Mets holding a lead – but as we get closer to the playoffs, it becomes an issue!

Eztra Innings: 09/05/07

Marz’s thoughts:  The football season starts tomorrow and I am a huge football fan and love watching it on TV. I am also a huge baseball fan love to watch baseball on TV. I can’t understand for the life of me if you are a sports fan why you would pit one sport against the other. I tend to feel that if you are from a city that you would watch and cheer for "ALL" the teams! For example, it bothers me when the Philly fans say that they are giving up on the Phillies and going to the Eagles after a loss. Stick it out with your team until the season ends!
P.S. – Go Eagles…uh, i mean Phillies too!

Cuch’s thoughts:  Speaking of football…The Michigan Wolverines lose to Appalachian State and all of a sudden fall out of the Top 25. College football as a sport is nice, as a playoff is STUPID!! They lose one game against a GREAT Subdivision team and their season might as well be over. They have no shot at a National Championship and the BCS is totally bogus!
P.S. – The Red Sox, Indians, Angels and Mets are in the playoffs. I think at this point it is safe to say they are 4 of the 8 bids.

Extra Innings: 09/04/07

Marz’s thoughts:  Juan Encarnacion was hit in the eye on deck. It is a sad to see it and a rough place to be. He was on deck waiting to hit and his career could be over. Baseball has been played for so long and I have never seen that before. Now they are talking about putting something up by the on-deck circle to protect batters. They tell fans to be aware of batted or thrown balls and it should be the same for players. They must be aware. Encarnacion was looking down when the ball was hit to him and I hope and pray he is well.
P.S. – If the Phils and Mets continue to play the way they have been, it could be over soon!

Cuch’s thoughtsVinny and John,
To clarify a few things I said earlier. I wouldn’t have booed Zambrano myself (my wife won’t let me). But I understand why the fans did boo him (they have every right to). I want to support him and do hope he does well. I like rooting for players individual success, but the the teams success is the most important. It’s not the money he makes. We know what Zambrano can do and know he let his emotions get the best of him in that game. In our disappointment the fans showed their emotions outwardly. That’s why, of all the players, Zambrano shouldn’t have thrown his fans under the bus for booing him. Thanks for the discussion.

p.s. Chris is nicer than you making out to be.
PPS – In response to Beau, he is on, i like it – but as for Chris – YEAH, ok, you are right…he is not that mean! As Johnny Marz would say – WE KID WITH HIM!
