Marz’s thoughts: Brendan Ryan swings at a 3-0 pitch in the 1st inning against Cole Hamels. Hamels is coming back from injury and you want to make him throw pitches. It is a bad mistake from a young player. Tony LaRussa should have reprimanded him and let him know never to do it again. Instead, he takes him out of the game and tries to make an example out of him. I can tell from the video that the kid missed a sign. What would have happened if it were Albert Pujols or Jim Edmonds? Would LaRussa’s reaction have been the same?
P.S. – Arrgghh…With it be here National Talk Like a Pirate Day, here hopes that the Pirates of Pittsburgh walk off with the booty and send the Padres off ye sea!
Cuch’s thoughts: Yes, the New York Mets are in trouble but why? Is it because no one is stepping up for them in the clubhouse? Is it because of Willie Randolph? Is it because the Nationals are on fire? How about the Mets just aren’t as good as we all think? They are what they are…a team that is leading the Phillies in the east by a game and half. They do not have the horses on the staff and the bullpen is very shaky. One would think in the poor NL that the Mets will still make the playoffs, but limping in?
P.S. – Colorado and LA – Don’t lose today or tomorrow ye be walking the plank! The winner gets one extra day!
Marz’s thoughts: Well, my Eagles **** and I took my lumps today like a man. It is now baseball 24-7. I have given up on the Eagles. How could you not be excited about the pennant races this year and the wildcard?
P.S. – Can’t wait until this rash goes away – I am NOT using that baseball urn now!
Cuch’s thoughts: Based on the schedules the rest of the way…Philly has the edge over the Mets…Chicago has the edge over Milwaukee and San Diego is slightly better than Milwaukee. That series at the end of the year where the Padres visit the Brewers for 4 can be the big series of the YEAR!
P.S. – The Dodgers visit the Rockies for 3 this week, the team who losses the series will be entered into the Leading Off elimination pool
Marz’s thoughts: This past weekend, there were some big series we had to look forward to. Coming into this week, there is really only one major series and that is Detroit in Cleveland. Teams like the Yankees, Phillies and Mets need to go out and keep pace and play with the same intensity as they did this weekend. Detroit is on a roll and playing like the team that made it to the World Series last year. I look for them to sweep Cleveland at Jacobs Field.
P.S. – I am gonna gather all of my cards and sell them at $0.15 cents apiece. Now I can buy new socks for the show!
Cuch’s thoughts: It is about time the Cardinals fell off. I was stupified that they won it all last year and remain that way today. Their pitching staff was made worse this year than in 06 and they are now 7 games below .500 and 7 games out of the NL Central lead and that is all in the worst division in baseball if you go by overall record. This gives Milwaukee or Chicago a chance to be this years version of St. Louis and there are many more likable guys on those teams that fans will be able to pull for!
P.S. – Thanks for the email from Jimmy – now we know all about "Kerry Team" in Ireland and I found out they won on Sunday and now have 35 championships. I just don’t know where that measures up with the Yankees. That is my next problem
Marz’s thoughts: The Cubs and Cards have a crucial weekend series coming up this weekend and the Cards are in need of a win or they will be added to the Leading Off Elimination pool. The atmosphere will be great there with Ozzie Smith throwing out the first pitch. Plus, with the new stadium it kicks it up a notch… i like it better than the old Busch.
P.S. – Great weekend of sports – college football, EAGLES and BASEBALL – Go Phils…
Cuch’s thoughts: Predictions for the weekend – Dodgers sweep D-Backs, Cubs split with Cards, Yankees take 2 of 3 from Boston, Tigers take 2 of 3 from Twins, Phillies take 2 of 3 from Mets, Rockies lose 2 of 3 from Marlins and Padres lose 2 of 3 from Giants.
P.S. – Don’t forget – "Don’t hoot with the Owls and then expect to soar with the Eagles!"
Marz’s thoughts: While my predictions for Rookie of the Year were not really good, my predictions in the American League were much better. There is more parity in baseball this year which makes it tougher and tougher to make predictions before the season. I was around 50% this year and next year I am shooting for 75%.
P.S. – Vinny had about 40% and Chris 35% which means that they are not nearly as smart as I and they should simply retire TODAY!
Cuch’s thoughts: Johnny Marz is a cheater! I knew this was going to happen. I spoke of it at the top of the show. He keeps picking this game of the day pre-emptively and leaving me with the scraps. No wonder he gets 2 of every 19 right. If not for cheating, he would clearly be shut out!
P.S. – Troy Glaus could not have picked a better time to get surgery and be missing for the remainder of the year. His name just came up in connections with the steroid investigation and now he is unavailable for comment.
Marz’s thoughts: With all the negativity surrounding sports today, it was so nice to have Jeff Suppan on our show. He is a player that exemplifies the way athletes should be today….humble, generous and respectful. I have become a fan of players that show these qualities and add Jeff Suppan to that list!
P.S. – I am gonna pick my game of the day for tomorrow…I am going with Philly – Colorado AGAIN. This is a pre-emptive strike…i gotta be right!
Cuch’s thoughts: So i guess we will officially eliminate the Mariners tomorrow – for some reason…we don’t shut up and teams get to last another day. Don’t be fooled, the M’s (although fun) are toast. Next on the list…St. Louis needs to get a win to avoid being discussed. The Rockies – Phillies loser over the next two days and the Dodgers are all on alert!
P.S. – We apologize for mis-reporting the issue…Ozzie Guillen has actually been promoted to owner of the team. They felt the extension to 2012 was not enough!
Our thoughts: 9.11.01 is a tragic day for the United States…as a nation we mourn the loss of so many innocent souls…baseball played an important role in the healing of the nation by returning to action. Johnny Marz remembers a specific moment when Larry Bowa had tears streaming down his eyes during the National Anthem. Everyone was touched and no one should forget!
Cuch, Marz, Chris the Producer, EJ the Engineer, Joy Joy the Marlin & Joe
Seth’s thoughts: So simply because Donovan McNabb can’t complete a pass and the Eagles have brutal special teams, i have to host this morning? Well I had fun and I am rooting for the Eagles to lose everyweek now! Johnny Marz is almost back to his normal self and I expect to see him tomorrow.
P.S. – I guess I can not say much though cause my team is the Syracuse Orange and they do not appear to winning another game for 7 years!
Cuch’s thoughts: Congrats to Curtis Granderson – a real nice guy and a now one of only 3 men to hit 20 doubles, triples, homers and have 20 steals. That is real impressive regardless the ballpark to have that power, speed and agility! I spoke to him several times in Spring Training and during the year and he is in the category of "guys you wanna root for". I hope this is just the beginning.
P.S. – On this day – JETS fans are classless! J-E-T-S Mess Mess Mess
Marz’s thoughts: I am looking forward to the weekend. I am rooting all weekend for my Phils to climb back into this wild card and division race! I will also be rooting for the Eagles this weekend against the Packers! Enjoy the weekend of sports – it is a packed one!
P.S. – Thanks to all my adoring fans who allowed me to play the Eagles song at the end of the show!
Cuch’s thoughts: Several teams on are the brink this weekend. First off, if either Seattle or Detroit pull off a sweep this weekend, the other team is OUT! The Rockies, Dodgers and Phillies are also on the brink. All teams involved need to think 2 out of 3 in their series…We will AGAIN attempt to eliminate the Braves on Monday – they are out but we just can’t officially find the time to do it.
P.S. – I can’t wait until the Eagles lose this weekend JUST so we can rub it in to John on Monday!
Marz’s thoughts: Kenny Rogers and Mark Mulder came back pitching for two teams that are in the Wild Card hunt. Sometimes it is not the trades you make but the guys you get back from injury and how well they perform that can put a team over the top and into the playoffs.
P.S. – Here is a note to all you players that listen. Come on the show and hit homers and throw shutouts…ask Brandon Phillips and Justin Germano.
Cuch’s thoughts: I have no problem with Carl Crawford getting suspended as he did for arguing with the umpire on a play at first base. The only issue i have with the situation is that he was entirely right. Now that should not determine the his suspension but as a competitor, it is clear that he would get furious at such a bad call. There is no suspension but what can we do to the umpire for getting it wrong? I believe the umps do a great job as a whole but there is no visible punishment for an ump when they make the mistake.
P.S. – Keep an eye on Carlos Delgado and his sore hip. He is having an MRI and although right now it is not the biggest deal with the Mets holding a lead – but as we get closer to the playoffs, it becomes an issue!
